How good is the Ford Ranger off-road?

The new generation of Ford Ranger pickup truck offers better all-terrain functionality and slicker style – but it is the former that will really entice buyers to the big off-roader.

Although Ford is better known for its smaller models, like the Fiesta and Focus, that’s not to say it can’t produce monster off-roaders like the Ford Ranger.

But, as it is a Ford, the Ford Ranger doesn’t just offer all-terrain abilities. The new generation Ford Ranger goes the extra mile, says the manufacturer.

But can it match up to superb all-round off-roaders such as the Land Rover Defender or should it have remained a US-only model, where the pickup body style is popular?

Off-road

Each model in the new Ford Ranger range offers four-wheel-drive as standard and a powerful 3.2-litre diesel engine is also available that produces 197bhp.

The mammoth Ranger has a towing capacity of up to 3,350kg, which is equivalent to three and a half tonnes. It can also drive in up to 800mm of water because of its high ride height.

In terms of size the Ranger is available with three body styles: Regular, Super and Double. Each offers a different sense of functionality.

Its off-road capabilities are supported by extensive safety equipment which includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and emergency brake assist, of which help achieve a five star EuroNCAP safety rating.

Convenience

Inside the Ranger cabin there are up to 23 different storage compartments which makes storing drinks, maps and any other luggage a bit easier.

Other convenient storage features include a large glove box which can accommodate a 16-inch laptop computer, and an 8.5-litre centre console which can store six beverages, which is the best in its class.

Style

Compared to its processor, the new Ranger has been revamped in terms of style. The most obvious styling changes are with its exterior where it features taut lines. Its different body styles also offer a sense of style as some are bulkier than others.

There are four different trim levels available with the Ranger, which make it highly customisable, especially for a pickup truck. They include Ranger XL, Ranger XLT, Ranger Thunder and Ranger Wildtrak.

Ford Ranger prices start from £15,515.
