With pricing set to be announced for the first model in the low-cost but high-quality car range, it is time to take a look at the Renault-owned manufacturer in more detail.
What is Dacia?
Dacia is a car manufacturer from Romania founded in 1966. Early Dacia cars were based on Renault models and the close links continue to this day.
Renault bought Dacia in 1999 and since then has been sold across Europe with plenty of success.
Dacia sold 350,000 cars in 2010 worldwide and it is this success that has convinced Renault to launch the brand in the UK.
Dacia’s main selling point is the incredible value-for-money the brand offers. Ultra-low prices mean it new Dacia cars undercut many other cars on the market and offer a low-cost alternative for many customers.
To do this, Dacia often offers basic but well-built and practical cars. By focusing solely on the essential equipment Dacia cuts cost when making its new cars and as a result can offer lower prices than many of its rivals.
However, low Dacia prices should not be confused with low quality. The durable Dacia Duster SUV, for example, has won a number of awards in France and Germany and the latter even voted Dacia its second favourite manufacturer in the annual JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey, which ranks car makers on criteria such as reliability, safety and equipment levels
In the UK, Dacia will make use of Renault’s efficient diesel and petrol engines, ensuring low running costs are matched with low prices.
Dacia is perhaps best known in the UK for its popularity with Top Gear presenter James May, who described the new Duster as ‘a car for people over-endowed with sense’.
What Dacia cars are available in the UK?
Dacia will launch the new Dacia Duster SUV as its first UK model. The Dacia Duster is a large, practical SUV offering five-seats, four-wheel drive and a muscular design.
The Dacia Duster is a big car with a large boot and roof rails to enable it to carry extra luggage. Sporting a chrome front grille and an optional range of extras including wheel arch extensions and door protectors, the Duster is a basic, durable and rugged 4×4.
More importantly, Dacia Duster prices will start from less than £10,000. This is on par with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Kia Rio.
For a large SUV, this is an incredibly low starting price and is sure to appeal to those looking for a new car bargain in the UK.
The Dacia Duster can seat five and offers up to 475 litres of boot space, which can be extended to 1,636 litres with the rear seats folded.
Dacia will expand its range in the UK with one other model initially; the Dacia Sandero hatchback. However, the Dacia Lodgy MPV, revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012, could be sold in the UK as well.
The Lodgy will be available in both five- and seven-seat variation and will be similar in size to the Renault Scenic and larger Grand Scenic. However, so far only left-hand-drive versions have been confirmed.
What are Dacia prices in the UK?
Dacia prices in the UK are set to ensure the brand is one of the most affordable of any car maker. Dacia Duster prices and specification will be announced on 28th June 2012 but the brand has confirmed Duster prices will start from under £10,000.
This will make it the cheapest 4×4 SUV on sale in the UK when it goes on sale and Dacia says customers can buy a Dacia Duster after leaving a deposit of just £100.
Dacia Sandero prices will be even lower; starting from under £7,000 for the small hatchback. It will become one of the cheapest cars on sale in the UK. The full range of Dacia Sandero prices will be revealed later in 2012.
