A new deal with Zipcar, a car sharing club, means drivers can book a premium Vauxhall Ampera hatchback for the day on a pay as you go basis.
The five-door Ampera will join a 1,700 fleet in London but it will be the most affordable of them all thanks to its 50-mile electric range.
For shorter city journeys this means drivers will not have to fill up on expensive petrol or diesel, instead using a less expensive electric charger to power the car.
However, range anxiety should not be a problem with the new Vauxhall Ampera because it comes with an on-board petrol engine acting as a generator for the battery pack.
The petrol engine extends the range to a massive 350 miles and delivers up to 230mpg in fuel economy and just 27g/km of CO2 emissions.
The Vauxhall Ampera avoids London’s emissions criteria and as a result is free from the congestion charge, allowing drivers to navigate the capital without the costs associated with other small family cars.
Mark Walker, General Manager of Zipcar UK said: “Thanks to the Ampera’s unique technology, on any given day, Zipcar members can be doing multiple short trips using only the stored electric battery power or longer trips powered by electricity generated by the on board range extender.
“For the first time in an electric vehicle, members need not worry about range or recharging.”
While the Vauxhall Ampera will be available to rent, it is also on sale at Perrys Vauxhall dealerships. New Vauxhall Ampera prices start from £32,000 after a £5,000 discount courtesy of the government’s plug-in grant.
Generously-equipped with the latest in-car equipment, the Vauxhall Ampera is an upmarket hatchback with lower running costs than any other car in the Vauxhall range.
The Vauxhall Ampera is on sale now.
