The 400Nm of torque in the hot hatch gives the car extra grunt and a quicker acceleration time, pushing it to 60mph from standing in just 5.9 seconds.
The powerful new Vauxhall Astra VXR will arrive in the UK in July, where it will be the most powerful and quickest Vauxhall Astra in the range.
Honed on the world-famous Nurburgring race track, the Vauxhall Astra VXR features tuning to improve cornering and steering, stiffer springs and a lower body to improve track performance.
The car also comes with Vauxhalls ‘Flexride’ system that allows the driver to choose three different driving modes including standard for road driving, Sport or the most extreme mode, VXR.
An improved chassis, Brembo brakes and 19″ alloy wheels complete the racing-inspired tuning of the Vauxhall Astra VXR, which also boasts aerodynamic improvements to the body work, sports seats and VXR badging throughout.
Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre direct-injection, the Vauxhall Astra VXR can reach speeds of up to 155mph where legal but the use of Vauxhall’s ground-breaking green technology means running costs are also affordable.
The car returns an impressive 34.9mpg and just 189g/km of CO2 emissions – an impressive figure for a sporty hot hatch.
Despite the lowered running costs, Vauxhall says the car still sounds like a performance vehicle with a ‘jet-like’ noise at the higher end of the rev-range.
The new Vauxhall Astra VXR will join the likes of the Vauxhall Insignia VXR in the sporty, hot hatch range at the top end of the Vauxhall line up.
It will go on sale in Vauxhall UK dealerships from July 2012 and Vauxhall Astra VXR prices will be announced closer to launch.
