The new car registration figures for March have been announced and as ever, they give a great indication of what car makers you should be paying attention to if you’re looking for a new car.
As ever, Ford was the dominant name in terms of UK car sales with the Ford Fiesta once again coming top of the pile.
It was no surprise to see the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra all finish in the top five best-sellers as they did for much of 2011 and the excellent value, low running costs and high equipment levels of the Ford and Vauxhall cars is no-brainer for many car buyers.
But who else caught the eye in the past month?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its superb selection of new car discounts (which have continued this month), Chevrolet saw sales rise an impressive nine per cent in March compared to the same month last year.
The US manufacturer has launched the new Chevrolet Aveo supermini and Chevrolet Cruze hatchback in that time and up to £2,000 off its small family car range has proven to be enough incentive to get people behind the wheel of its car range.
Similarly Citroen enjoyed a small rise in sale in March and one of the highest increases so far in 2011 out of any manufacturer thanks to a heady range of discounts and new car offers for its range throughout March and beyond.
Meanwhile Kia once again saw sales rise, this time by 11 per cent, thanks to the success of the superb Kia Picanto and Kia Rio hatchbacks, small cars with excellent economy, impressive driving dynamics and high levels of equipment.
It has also been bolstered by Kia’s superb seven-year warranty (up to 100,000 miles) which is actually the longest warranty available on the market with the exception of Vauxhall’s lifetime warranty (again up to 100,000 miles) and is fully transferable to a second owner.
Judging by the latest figures from the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), small, affordable hatchbacks are still bringing in interested buyers.
Which means it is a good thing we’ve got a handy guide to small cars in 2012 to help you make the decision if you’re looking for a new car this month.
