Ford’s latest take on its popular small family saloon was named ‘Best in Show’ at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) by Autoweek.
Named the Ford Fusion, the stylish concept car will be launched in the UK as the new Ford Mondeo in 2013 as Ford attempts to take on the Vauxhall Insignia in the family car market.
“It’s very rare for a midsize sedan (saloon) to win Best in Show,” said Autoweek Editor Wes Raynal. “I think it’s the first of a lot of awards the Fusion is going to win this year.”
Ford’s chief creative officer, J Mays, has designed the car as ‘the best car ever to come out of the design and engineering centre’ and expects it to sell well across the world.
Ford’s next generation Mondeo is expected to be available with petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. Ford has not ruled out a plug-in hybrid engine setup either, meaning it could be capable of travelling on purely electric power for short distances.
Prices and specification have not been released for the new UK Ford Mondeo but this is expected to be revealed closer to a proposed 2013 launch date.
However, the new design of the Mondeo has moved towards a more aggressive styling complete with gaping Ford grille, narrow headlamps and a sporty, stylised bonnet.
This is expected to be toned down for a production version but it is expected to feature some of Ford’s new technology including the voice-activated SYNC system seen in the new Ford Focus.
It will also feature automatic parking aids and safety equipment such as blind spot information technology and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
The concept will make its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It will arrive in UK Ford dealerships in 2013.
