According to What Car? magazine, the more powerful, race track-inspired hatchback is still the best ‘hot hatch’ on sale in the UK today after awarding it the Best Hot Hatch award in its annual ceremony.
Based on the standard Renault Megane hatchback, the Renaultsport 250 Cup has several noticeable additions.
The main one comes in the form of the 250bhp engine, the origin of the car’s name, delivering a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 156mph.
It also adds new suspension, anti-roll bars, and better brakes to cope with the extra power alongside some new, sportier body kit and interior additions such as sports seats and Renaultsport upholstery and badging.
According to the judges at What Car?, the Megane Renaultsport 250 Cup offered more ‘attitude and exhilaration’ than any other hot hatch.
Judges also praised its ability to double as an everyday car with equipment such as cruise control and parking sensors fitted as standard.
What Car? magazine editor in chief Chas Hallett explained: “The Megane Renaultsport 250 Cup is the perfect hot hatch. Most importantly, it’s engaging and huge fun on an empty country road, but it’s also practical enough for everyday use. It’s a comfortable winner of our Hot Hatch of the Year award.”
Renault is well known for its hot hatch versions and motor sport origins. Models such as the Twingo city car and Clio supermini both offer sporty versions, but the Megane is the most popular with UK buyers.
The Megane Renaultsport 250 Cup is priced at around £22,000 in the UK.
