The upmarket hatchback is the first in the UK to use an extended-range electric system to power it by matching electric power with a small petrol engine.
Initially it is capable of travelling on electric power alone for 50 miles courtesy of a standard electric car charger. However, it also uses a petrol engine which can be filled as normal and can recharge the battery on the move to extend the range to up to 350 miles.
This is over three times longer than an electric car but still delivers just 40g/km of CO2 emissions. This is comfortably under the cut off point for paying road tax in the UK and is exempt from the London congestion charge.
The new Vauxhall Ampera five-door hatchback seats four and costs from £29,995 but the entry-level version at this price will only be available from September.
Instead, a £32,250 ‘Positiv’ version is available from launch and will arrive in Perrys Vauxhall Canterbury dealership from March.
The Ampera Positiv comes with leather interior, heated front seats and parking sensors alongside the standard DAB radio, touch screen, cruise control and alloy wheels.
A range-topping trim level, Electon, is also available from £33,995 and adds extra equipment such as a DVD player with hard-disc storage, sat-nav, colour touch screen and a Bose sound system.
The Perrys dealership will have both a sales expert and an aftersales expert at the site to advise existing and potential Vauxhall Ampera buyers and all new cars will come with Vauxhall’s lifetime warranty (up to 100,000 miles) and a separate eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty.
All Vauxhall Ampera owners will also come with a telephone number and email address of an Ampera expert at Vauxhall’s UK head office for any questions they may have about the car once it is purchased.
