The success of the likes of the Nissan Juke has convinced Ford to match SUV styling to the Ford Fiesta platform and launch the car in India from next year.
However, in keeping with Ford’s strategy to sell cars across several global markets, a relatively unchanged version is expected to eventually make it to Europe and the UK.
The concept car revealed in a teaser image is named the Ford EcoSport and looks like it takes is cues from the recent Ford Vertrek concept, a larger SUV set to replace the Ford Kuga in the UK.
The stylised bonnet, concept car-headlamps and coupe-like roofline of the Ford EcoSport suggests the design language will be taken from some of its recent new cars.
However, engine options and other information such as pricing has not been announced for the crossover but it will be expected to feature Ford’s low-CO2 Econetic diesel engine technology and possibly the powerful but frugal Ecoboost petrol engines used in Ford cars such as the new 2011 Focus.
Any potential new compact SUV would also boast a higher level of equipment in Europe than that of the Indian model.
This means Ford’s SYNC technology, which includes voice controls and Bluetooth, will be made available after first appearing on the new Ford Focus.
A new Ford SUV would also feature extensive safety systems including Electronic Stability Control to aid handling in corners and extra technology such as Blind Spot Information Systems and a full range of airbags.
The Ford EcoSport concept car will be revealed at the Delhi Motor Show in January as a potential replacement for the low-selling Ford Fusion. It has not been confirmed when it will be arriving in UK Ford dealerships.
