When Citroen decided to move a tad more upmarket they released more premium models in the shape of the DS range.
The DS name is taken from Citroen’s past and was revived to offer more premium specification and stylish designs than its standard range.
Citroen first released the Citroen DS3, which was based on the C3 model, and then released the Cittroen DS4, which was based on the C4 model.
And now Citroen will be introducing a new model into the DS range. The Citroen DS5.
So what is the Citroen DS5?
The Citroen DS5 was first unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show and seemed to impress the gathered media instantly.
The new DS5 will use the same hybrid engine as the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 crossover which means it will use both a diesel engine and an electric motor powered by a battery pack. Even so, this engine will still deliver 200bhp of power.
The DS5 will also feature the ability to run on electric power alone for short distances, which is especially useful in the city.
With this hybrid engine Citroen predict that the DS5 will have emissions less than 100g/km, which will put it in the bottom band of road tax – a remarkable achievement for a large family car.
Exterior styling wise, the new DS5 will play on ideas from the DS3 and DS4, like the front grille design and LED headlights. Although, unique design of the DS5 includes very stylish chrome inserts and a low rear end which both make its roofline look a little like a coupe.
Its interior is equipped with five seats and rather nice upholstery. A sporty steering wheel also makes an appearance and this is accompanied by a cockpit like design with dials and switches over-head and a split centre console which is low down in the cabin.
When released the Citroen DS5 is expected to get a lot of attention due to the previous impressive reception of the other DS models.
The first Citroen DS5 models are expected to go on sale in the UK in 2012.
