UK’s best winter tyres used by Land Rover

The annual Auto Express winter tyre awards found Continental made the best winter tyres in the UK – weeks after Land Rover announced it has chosen the tyre maker as its official supplier this year.

Auto Express commented, “Consistently good performances earn Continental our winter tyre crown. Great all round performance with no weaknesses, sees off winter rivals and takes the win.”

The Continental tyres finished ahead of eight others in a series of tests including snow tests and examinations of road feel and refinement.

The tyres were judged on performance, safety, durability and value in the tests, with Continental coming out top.

Land Rover will sell the ContiCrossContact Winter tyres, designed especially for 4×4 cars and SUVs, for its Land Rover Freelander 2 – the best-selling UK Land Rover – and the luxurious Range Rover Sport this year.

Land Rover tested a number of tyres top ensure its famous grip, traction and 4×4 ability was not compromised by winter tyres and signed a deal with Continental earlier this year.

The tyres, says Land Rover, will give ‘excellent traction and braking performance on cold, frosty/icy and even wet winter roads’.

The tyres also reduce the risk of aquaplaning and are low rolling resistance tyres designed to help fuel consumption in the premium 4x4s.

According to performance magazine Evo, which ran the awards alongside Auto Express: “Continental is the best performer overall, with solid results seeing it take first place. What our test shows is that not only are winter tyres vastly superior in the snow but that the best outperform a quality summer tyre when the roads are wet and near freezing.”

The Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has advised drivers to fit winter tyres to their cars this year.

Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “Winter tyres provide greater grip and handling, reducing braking distances in cold, wet conditions as well as on snow and ice. With temperatures starting to drop and the wetter seasons approaching, motorists should make sure they have the best tyres for the road and climate conditions.”
