Five-star safety for new Citroen DS5

EuroNCAP awarded the upmarket hatchback five stars in its latest round of tests, including a 97 per cent score in the safety assist category thanks to its high level of safety equipment.

The Citroen DS5, the third in the premium DS Line after the launch of the DS3 supermini and DS4 crossover, is the also the third to achieve the five-star rating.

It was no doubt helped by a next-generation Lane Departure Warning System capable of telling a driver when they drift out of their lane.

Other technology includes a head-up display showing speed and other information and high-beam headlamps which automatically changes the high-beam when necessary.

The Citroen DS5 also comes with front passenger, driver, side body and side head airbags along with speed limitation, electronic stability control and a seatbelt reminder system for all seats in the car.

Linda Jackson, Citroën UK’s Managing Director, commented; “Attention to safety is paramount in any Citroën model and we’re delighted that New DS5 has performed so well in the latest Euro NCAP tests.

The EuroNCAP safety tests are the most respected safety tests in Europe and manufacturers have been known to update a model to achieve a five-star rating if the car falls short.

The Citroen DS5 was designed with a five-star rating in mind – an important aspect as it aims for the family car market dominated by the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia.

To do this Citroen has introduced its stylish DS language, including a sloping, coupe-like roofline, to the DS5 and included higher quality materials inside such as chrome highlights, ambient lighting and new ipholstery.

The car is also the first DS model to feature a hybrid powertrain. The Hybrid4 system is the same used on the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 – the first ever mass produced diesel hybrid car.

The system, which uses a 2.0-litre diesel and 37bhp electric motor, means CO2 emissions are just 99g/km, making the Citroen DS5 one of the largest cars eligible for zero road tax and exemption from the London congestion charge.

The Citroen DS5 will go on sale in the UK early in 2012, but prices will be announced closer to launch.
