The astonishing award streak continued as judges at the Auto Express 2011 new car awards named the two-seat roadster as the winner once again.
The reasons, said Auto Express acting editor Graham Hope, were down to the Mazda MX-5s famous ability to offer one of the most fun and involving drives available in the UK today.
Hope said: "A short blast behind the wheel is all you’ll need to understand why the latest MX-5 is such as smash hit. For smiles-per-mile at an affordable price, nothing else comes close.
"Lively performance and beautifully balanced, confidence-inspiring handling combine with ageless looks and a simple, well built cabin – all the things which buyers demand in a roadster."
The performance comes from Mazda’s commitment to reducing weight in its roadster model. Meanwhile, prices undercut many of its key rivals.
For example, an entry-level mode costs from £16,999 and Peter Allibon, sales director for Mazda UK, believes the low running costs of the car are a major factor in its 22 years of success in the UK.
He said: "Together with its low running costs, enviable reliability and our current range of ‘customer savings’ off the list price, the MX-5 remains an extremely competitive proposition."
The Mazda MX-5 range comprises a soft-top and a hard-top coupe, depending on preference. However, Mazda is never shy in terms of launching special editions of the MX-5.
These include a 20-year anniversary model and a Kendo special edition, which featured matte grey body paint.
More recently, a Black limited edition, based on the styling of the Mazda MX-5 GT track car and limited to just 500 editions.
