The new body style, a saloon was launched in the UK in 2009, was launched alongside the British round of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) at the site.
The new five-door Chevrolet Cruze hatchback was offered for test drive in Donington, giving a first taste of the new small family car before its launch at the end of July.
Chevrolet’s Craig Cheetham explained: “The timing and location was perfect for us to launch the new Cruze hatchback. With a great mix of rural and urban routes right on Donington’s doorstep we were able to offer press an all-encompassing opportunity to try our new car, throwing in a bit of fun on a specially prepared rally stage too. A great event for all who attended.”
Priced from £13,995, the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback features the US brand’s now compulsory double grille used in the likes of the new Chevrolet Aveo and even the new Orlando MPV, which was introduced to the UK earlier in the year.
The hatchback is expected to comfortably outsell the saloon in the UK because of the increased boot space – 413 litres – and UK buyer’s preference for the hatchback body style.
At launch, three engines will be available with the Cruze hatchback; 1.6-litre or 1.8-litre petrol engines and a 2.0-litre diesel seen in the Orlando.
In 2012, Chevrolet will introduce a smaller diesel in the shape of a 1.7-litre unit, which is expected to be one of the most popular options in the range.
The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be available in entry-level LS, LT and range-topping LTZ specification levels in the UK. A further Executive Pack is also available, adding leather upholstery and satellite navigation to the specification.
