How reliable is your car? And what car makers build the most reliable models? According to Warranty Direct, if you want a reliable car you should look towards the French manufacturers.
The Peugeot 207 was rated the most reliable car on the market today out of all European manufacturers, and the Peugeot 206 CC, Peugeot 107 and Renault Clio all appeared in the top ten.
The car warranty website judged cars on rate of failure, average mileage, age and repair cost to calculate a ‘Reliability Index’.
Over an average year, only 1 in 17 Peugeot 207s broke down. This is compared to nearly half of all Mercedes SL models.
Based on used cars that are 3-7 years old, the Peugeot finished ahead of the Fiat Panda to take the title. It was a major success for Fiat, with the small city car the only Italian model to make the top ten.
The results may come as a surprise to some, as Warranty Direct managing director, Duncan McClure Fisher, explained: "Some people might be surprised to see Fiat and Peugeot claiming the top three positions, but the data doesn’t lie – these cars are very dependable."
It shows a huge leap in reliability from some of the mainstream manufacturers and the higher build quality and improved reliability can only be a good thing for Peugeot and Fiat customers.
However, while the Peugeot 207 took the top spot, the Renault Clio was found to be the cheapest to repair, costing just £173.40 on average to get fixed. This, matched with just one in five cars needed to be repaired, put the supermini in fifth place overall.
At the other end of the scale, the BMW 7-Series cost £7,239 on average to repair, making it the car with the most expensive average repair bill.
While the results are promising for Peugeot, Renault and Fiat, non-European manufacturers such as Kia are highly competitive in terms of reliability, and the Korean car maker even offers an industry-leading seven-year warranty, such is its confidence in its new cars.
Other manufacturers who score well on the worldwide manufacturer index include Ford and Mazda, whose Fiesta and Mazda2 respectively are included in the top ten most reliable models around the world.
