The seven-seat Alhambra arrived in the UK late last year and has been an instant success for the Spanish brand thanks to its practicality, attractive design and small car-handling.
CarBuyer.co.uk Editor Dan Strong explained the decision: "With a clever seven-seat interior and a large boot, the SEAT Alhambra is all the MPV you’ll ever need!
"As our careful deliberations revealed, the car is spacious and practical inside, and thanks to a range of Volkswagen-sourced engines it’s incredibly fuel-efficient. All diesel engines are equipped with Stop/Start systems, which cut the engine when the vehicle is stationary to save fuel."
The range has been improved this year with the introduction of the four-wheel drive option, which is available with the 140PS 2.0-litre TDi model and features the same trims and equipment as the two-wheel drive model currently on sale.
Seat has quoted fuel economy figures of 47.1mpg – one of the best in the segment for a large 4×4 MPV.
It will also deliver CO2 figures of 158g/km if the efficient Ecomotive-badged model is chosen despite offering a top speed of 119mph and a 0-62mph sprint time of 11.4 seconds.
Seat will add a new six-seat 4×4 model to the Alhambra range later in the year. This will feature less luggage space but six individual seats to offer more space for the driver and five passengers.
However, Seat has not decided if it will build right-hand drive versions of the 4×4 for the UK market. A decision on whether the 4×4 Alhambra MPV will appear in Perrys Seat showrooms will take place in the next few months.
The Seat Alhambra, which was crowned WhatCar? Best MPV 2011, is available now from £22,800 on-the-road.
