The new, energy-saving transmission and dry twin clutch is now available for the MiTo supermini in UK dealers.
Designed to improve performance by interacting with the braking, engine control and vehicle stability control systems, the transmission is available on Lusso and Veloce specification models.
It is, however, only available with the 1.4-litre TB MultiAir petrol model. The 135bhp MiTo will also feature a Start&Stop system to improve fuel consumption figures to 38.7mpg and CO2 emissions to 128g/km.
Performance outpaces that of the MiTo fitted with a manual gearbox. This means the MiTo with TCT automatic transmission can reach 62mph from standing in 8.2 seconds – an improvement of 0.2 seconds.
The TCT transmission differs from an automatic transmission because it allows selection of a new gear while the previous one is still engaged.
According to Alfa, this will result in a ‘comfort and sporty feeling far superior to those offered by conventional automatic transmissions’.
The TCT automatic transmission will appear on the Alfa MiTo in the UK first, but is expected to be expanded to other MultiAir models in future.
The MultiAir technology, designed by Alfa’s owners, the Fiat Group, is the winner of the International Engine of the Year Award 2010 for its high performance and efficiency compared to similar-size petrol engines.
It was designed to complement the MultiJet range of diesel engines, also available on the MiTo and reducing CO2 emissions to below 115g/km on some versions.
The Alfa MiTo 1.4 TB MultiAir with Alfa TCT is available in Lusso and Veloce trim levels, with prices starting from £16,745 OTR.
