The luxury Range Rover Sport, the second model in Land Rover’s premium sub-brand, won the ‘Best All Wheel Drive Towcar over 1800kgs’ award ahead of the Honda CRV, Toyota Land Cruiser and Hyundai Sante Fe.
Cars in a number of categories were tested at Millbrook Proving Ground to find the most capable in terms of towing ability, driving dynamics, acceleration and braking when hitched with a trailer.
The Range Rover Sport, designed with on-road driving in mind but retaining the all-wheel drive and towing ability Land Rover models are renown for, was an easy choice for the judges.
Clive White of The Caravan Club said: "How do you persuade over 2.5-tonnes of 4×4, plus a caravan to perform like a sports grand tourer?
"Answer: 3.0-litres of pokey diesel mated to a pretty handy six-speed auto box and some useful suspension trickery, not forgetting 4WD from the 4WD experts. The Range Rover Sport handled all of the tests effortlessly."
The Range Rover Sport offers 3500kgs of towing capacity – the same as the larger Range Rover -and features Tow Assist, a surround camera system and trailer stability assist to improve performance.
“The Range Rover Sport is a truly capable vehicle,” said Land Rover UK’s managing director, John Edwards. “On the road, it’s a comfortable Sports Tourer that eats up the miles, off-road its abilities are best-in-class."
Ski Sunday presenter Graham Bell presented the award to Land Rover at the ceremony and he praised how thorough the tests were before the class winners were decided.
He said: "It’s been fun to be involved with the Competition; caravans are familiar sights at sporting events so it was really interesting to see which towcars are the best and what their capabilities are.”
