Judges of the annual awards identified the Discovery 4 as the outstanding car after extensive testing of over 40 models.
The aim of the tests was to help the half a million caravan owners in the UK find the best, greenest and best value towcar for the summer holidays.
Experts from What Car?, Practical Caravan and the Camping & Caravanning Club tested towing capacity, practicality, comfort and performance to find the best towcar available on the UK market today, and the Discovery 4 was named the clear winner.
David Motton, Towcar Editor for Practical Caravan, said: "The Discovery 4 ticks more boxes than just about any other car. It’s the best car in this year’s tests by some margin and a more than worthy overall winner."
He praised the Discovery 4 for improving on previous versions in ‘every other area’ and providing unrivalled towing capacity with practicality. He added: ""Most cars picked up far lower scores for practicality than for towing, a sign that manufacturers really need to think harder about towcar drivers’ needs. Land Rover leads the way, though.
"The Land Rover Discovery 4 is an exceptional car."
The Land Rover Discovery 4 tested for the awards was the 3.0 TDV6 Xs model with a class-leading towing capacity of 3500kgs. Extra technology such as Tow Assist and Trailer Stability Assist increase its towing ability.
The Mercedes-Benz E350, Volvo XC60 and Range Rover Sport all finished behind the Land Rover Discovery in the awards, which also named the Kia Sedona as best MPV.
The seven-seat Discovery 4 was updated in 2009 and is available from £35,640 on-the-road.
