After receiving a five-star rating in the EuroNCAP tests, the SUV has excelled across the Atlantic in a variety of safety tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Sorento was awarded the maximum ratings in frontal, side, rear and rollover impact crash safety tests and was described as a ‘Top Safety Pick’ by the IIHS.
Previously, it had received impressive ratings in adult, child occupancy, pedestrian safety and safety assist in the industry standard EuroNCAP tests in 2009. The latest version of the Sorento was one of the first models to receive a five-star rating in the awards since they were redesigned last year.
Commenting on the EuroNCAP test result, Michael Cole of Kia Motors UK, said: "Engineers at Kia’s world-class Namyang R&D facility in Korea developed the new Sorento SUV to provide the highest levels of occupant protection in real-world accident scenarios.”
All Kia Sorento models sold in Europe and the US boast safety technology such as Electronic Stability Control and an Emergency Brake System.
Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing of Kia Motors America, said: “The 2011 Sorento is an example of Kia’s ongoing and rapid vehicle expansion, demonstrating that buyers can have an affordable, well-equipped and attractive CUV without sacrificing impressive levels of crash protection.”
The Kia Soul was also awarded five stars in the EuroNCAP ratings after being awarded 87 per cent in adult occupant safety, 86 per cent in child occupant safety and 86 per cent in safety assist.
