Seat’s 99g/km Leon Ecomotive arrives in UK

Seat’s low-CO2 Ecomotive signature, a rival to Vauxhall’s ecoFLEX and Ford’s ecoDrive technology, has already been applied to the Ibiza Alhambra models and it is now the turn of the Leon Ecomotive to be redesigned for 2010.

The latest version of the three-door supermini has headline-grabbing emissions of 99g/km and fuel economy as high as 74.3mpg which, if achieved on the road, would allow 900 miles before a visit to a petrol station was needed.

A more realistic urban driving figure of 60.1mpg is probably more likely and remains one of the highest mileage figures in the sector.

Emissions figures compare favourably to the 119g/km of CO2 emissions from previous versions without affecting performance. The Leon Ecomotive 0-62mph sprint time of 11.5 seconds is unchanged and it can reach speeds of 118mph.

The Spanish manufacturer’s Start/Stop technology turns off the engine when the car is in heavy traffic to save fuel and joins a Brake Energy Recovery system for the first time on a Seat model.

The ‘super-frugal’ 1.6-litre TDI engine with common rail technology and diesel particulate filter is a new addition to the Leon Ecomotive range, replacing the older version on the outgoing model.

Aside from the ‘green’ credentials, Seat has equipped the Leon Ecomotive with air conditioning, 16" alloy wheels and a host of technology such as ESP and ABS are fitted to standard models.

Extra customisation comes in the shape of bi-xenon headlights, auto lights and wipers and an auto dimming rear view mirror all offered as options.

Seat has already sold 500 Leon Ecomotive models in a commercial deal with British Gas, and UK Product Marketing Manager Andy Medcraft says the Ecomotive name will continue to grow.

He explained: "Ecomotive is a strong and growing strand of the SEAT story in the UK.

"With these great new models joining the already successful Ibiza Ecomotive and Alhambra Ecomotive, I’m confident that more and more business and private buyers will be turning to these impressive Seats."

Priced at £16,840 for entry-level Ecomotive S models, the latest edition of the Leon Ecomotive is available in UK showrooms now.
