4 CommentsIn one of the hardest-fought Car of the Year contests in recent years, the Vauxhall Insignia has taken the honours as 2009 European Car of the Year, polling an impressive 321 votes.
The 59-strong jury of senior motoring journalists from 23 European countries voted the Insignia first, with the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf coming in second and third respectively.
Graham Knell, General Manager of the Perrys Canterbury Vauxhall dealership, said “The launch of the Insignia is an important car for Perrys and the Vauxhall brand going forward, which is why we are so excited to introduce it into our Perrys Vauxhall Dealerships this month.”
“Its design is fresh and carries over few styling features from the outgoing Vectra, or any other existing Vauxhall models, instead paving the way for a new generation of Vauxhalls.”
Bill Parfitt, Chairman and Managing Director of General Motors UK, was equally encouraged by the win: “This is great news for General Motors / Vauxhall and its employees, suppliers and retailers. Vauxhall has made great strides in recent years, particularly in design and dynamics, and the Insignia illustrates what we’re capable of achieving. It offers great quality and value in a prestige package that will provide an exceptional ownership experience to our customers.”
This year, 37 cars were put forward for Car of the Year, with just seven short-listed for the ultimate award for the most outstanding car launched in the last 12 months. Each contender must be on sale in at least five European countries.
Vauxhall unveiled the Insignia at the British International Motor Show last July. With its flowing and sculpted coupe-like shape this premium newcomer to Vauxhall is available in both four door saloon and five door hatchback models.
The car continues to delight the senses on the inside too, with an ergonomically designed interior which compliments the exterior. With excellent standard features, including power heated and adjustable exterior mirrors, full USB interface options for portable music players, an onboard information computer and a wide range of interior storage choices the Insignia really is the must have executive car of 2009!
Whilst the Insignia is extremely distinctive, encompassing a number of great design features, blended with its stunning design and premium quality, it also delivers an exciting, responsive and secure ride.
The Insignia is available in a choice of three petrol engines, including six-speed manual and automatic versions, and an adaptive four-wheel drive option, all of which meet Euro Five Emissions Standards. So, whatever your driving style may be, this car is adapted for any situation.
The Insignia’s triumph marks the third Car of the Year accolade for Vauxhall. In 1985, the Astra won the title, followed two years later by the Carlton/Omega.
